Can I bring friends as companions on the O-1?

No. On the O-1, the only dependents authorized are the petitioner’s spouse and children who meet that definition, and they enter under the derivative category O-3. Friends, relatives outside that definition, or other personal contacts cannot be included as companions in your petition.

This does not mean those people cannot travel to the United States: it simply means each person needs their own independent basis to do so, separate from your O-1.

  • Short-term tourism or business travel follows the standard visitor path.
  • Work or study requires the corresponding visa category.

In other words, a friendship alone does not create the right to accompany an O-1 holder. Before planning a group trip, it is worth verifying the current rules with USCIS or a qualified specialist, so that each person enters the country through the correct channel.
