Can the L-1B be extended if I switch to L-1A?

Switching from L-1B to L-1A does not work as an automatic ‘extension’ of the visa. In practice, it is a change of category: you move from the specialized knowledge profile (L-1B) to the executive or managerial profile (L-1A).

This conversion can, however, have an impact on your authorized stay, because the L-1A and the L-1B have different maximum periods of stay, and the executive and managerial category generally allows a longer horizon. Even so, this is not a guaranteed renewal of the L-1B; it is a new review under a different category.

For the change to be approved, you must demonstrate that your current duties genuinely fit the executive or managerial profile, typically supported by:

• An organizational chart showing your position and the team or function under your responsibility.
• A detailed description of your role and duties.
• Documents establishing your authority and your role within the company.
