I am a visiting professor and the university says I can renew indefinitely. Does that qualify for EB-1B?

It may qualify, but the fact that the position is renewable, by itself, does not settle the matter. The EB-1B is the pathway for outstanding professors and researchers, and it looks at two axes that must work together: the nature of the job offer and your recognition in the field.

Regarding the employment relationship, the visa typically relies on a permanent or long-term offer, such as a tenured position (tenure or tenure-track) or an equivalent role with comparable stability. A visiting professor chair that renews can be a positive signal, but what matters is demonstrating continuity equivalent to a permanent offer, not merely the possibility of renewal.

The second axis is merit: the EB-1B requires you to show you are a high-level reference in your discipline, with evidence such as publications, international recognition, awards, and relevant contributions. Without that recognition, the stability of the position alone will not sustain the petition.
