Industrial city with European roots and growing diversity

Majority white population of German, Italian, and Greek descent; significant African American community; Latinos growing.

Canton's population is majority white, with roots in German, Italian, Greek, Irish, and Polish communities. The city's Greek community is one of the oldest and most organized in the American interior, with active churches, restaurants, and festivals.

The African American community represents a significant share of the population, concentrated in central and southeastern neighborhoods. Latinos have grown over the past two decades, with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Central Americans spread throughout the city.

Refugees from various backgrounds arrived through the International Institute of Akron and local churches. The Bhutanese-Nepali community, connected to the one in Akron, has some presence. Brazilians in Canton are a small minority, generally professionals linked to hospitals or small businesses, with ties to the larger community in Cleveland.

A very affordable city for a comfortable life

Accessible homeownership, low rent, groceries and services at the Midwest's most affordable level.

Canton ranks among the most affordable cities in the United States. A modest home in neighborhoods such as Ridgewood, Avondale, or Westfield can be purchased for a fraction of coastal prices. Renting apartments downtown or in North Canton is equally affordable.

Canton's municipal income tax rate is 2.5%. Property taxes in Stark County are moderate. Groceries, gas, and restaurant meals follow the most accessible Midwestern standard.

Those working in Cleveland or Akron but living in Canton can benefit from big-city salaries with small-city costs, commuting via I-77. The main caution concerns very inexpensive homes in declining areas: many require significant renovation and are located on streets with aging infrastructure.

Historic neighborhoods and suburbs with strong schools

The city offers everything from historic homes at low prices to sought-after suburbs like Jackson Township and Plain Township.

Ridgewood, Avondale, and Westfield are stable residential neighborhoods within the city proper, with affordable family homes. The Marketview neighborhood and parts of West Park have historic homes undergoing restoration. Hills and Dales, on the border with North Canton, is an enclave of older mansions.

North Canton, a separate municipality to the north, is the most sought-after suburb, with spacious homes and the well-regarded Hoover school district. Jackson Township, to the west, has modern homes on large lots and top-ranked schools. Plain Township, to the north of the city, offers similar suburban options.

Massillon, to the west, is a neighboring city with its own identity and a profile similar to Canton's. For those arriving on a tight budget, central city areas offer very low rents, though safety and property conditions should be verified block by block.

City with pockets of crime and very quiet suburbs

Suburbs like Jackson Township and North Canton rank among the safest in the state; central areas vary.

Canton has crime rates above the national average, with a strong geographic concentration. Neighborhoods such as the Shorb Avenue area, Tuscarawas-Cherry, Skyline, and parts of the southeast concentrate violent and property crime. Downtown has improved with the revitalization of Centennial Plaza.

North Canton, Jackson Township, Plain Township, Lake Township, and Perry Township rank among the safest suburbs in Ohio. Hills and Dales, within the city limits, is a stable residential enclave. Ridgewood and Avondale, though within the city proper, maintain a quiet residential profile.

The most practical concerns are car theft, residential break-ins in isolated areas, and drug-related crimes in certain pockets. Random violent crime in residential zones is less common. At night, outside busy areas and suburban neighborhoods, staying on main, well-lit streets is advisable.

A car-dependent city with a shared airport with Akron

SARTA operates local buses; CAK serves domestic flights 15 minutes away; CLE is the nearest international option.

Canton is a car-oriented city. The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) operates local bus routes with some service to Akron and Cleveland, and was a pioneer in the United States in operating hydrogen-powered buses. The network covers main corridors but does not replace a car for daily use.

Akron-Canton Airport (CAK), approximately 15 minutes north of the city, offers domestic flights to mid-sized and some major cities (Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando). For international flights, CLE (Cleveland Hopkins), 50 minutes away, is the primary option. Pittsburgh (PIT) is also accessible, approximately 2 hours away.

I-77 is the main artery, connecting Canton to Cleveland (north), Akron (north), and Charlotte (south). Bike paths exist primarily in metropolitan parks such as Stadium Park and Sippo Lake Park, but practical use for daily commuting is limited.

Football city and home of President McKinley

The Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton Symphony, and the National First Ladies' Library define the cultural scene.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is Canton's defining attraction. The NFL holds its annual enshrinement ceremony here, and Hall of Fame Week, in early August, draws fans from across the country. The Hall of Fame Village is being developed as a tourism complex surrounding the museum.

The William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, with the mausoleum of the president who was assassinated in 1901, is another landmark. The National First Ladies' Library in Canton is the only institution dedicated to American First Ladies. The Canton Museum of Art has a strong collection focused on watercolor and ceramics.

The performing arts scene includes the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the Canton Palace Theatre, and the Players Guild Theatre. The cultural calendar features the Hall of Fame Festival, First Friday in downtown, the St. George Cathedral Greek Festival, and the Italian American Festival. Local football is also significant: McKinley High School and Massillon Tigers share one of the most celebrated rivalries in American high school sports.

The William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, with a dome-shaped mausoleum, houses the president assassinated in 1901 and features exhibits on the era. The National First Ladies' Library, in the former home of Ida Saxton McKinley, is unique in the country.

The Canton Museum of Art and the MAPS Air Museum at the airport round out the cultural offerings. Stadium Park, Sippo Lake Park, and Walborn Reservoir offer trails, fishing, and access to nature.
