Kenner's Population: Ethnic Mosaic with Strong Hispanic and Vietnamese Presence
The city has a relatively balanced mix of white, Hispanic, African American, and Asian residents. Hispanics account for more than a quarter of the population. The traditional Vietnamese community is well established.
Kenner is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Louisiana. The population is divided relatively evenly among white, African American, and Hispanic residents, with Asians completing the mosaic. Hondurans form one of the largest diasporas in the country here, with Cubans and Mexicans also well represented.
The Vietnamese community in Jefferson Parish has deep historical roots, dating back to the fall of Saigon in 1975. It is concentrated in neighboring Marrero and Versailles (New Orleans East), but also has a presence in Kenner, with Buddhist temples, markets such as Hong Kong Food Market, and award-winning restaurants.
There is a small but active Brazilian community, primarily connected to aviation, services, and construction. Portuguese-language evangelical churches, Brazilian restaurants, and Latin American markets serve this community. Spanish is increasingly heard in schools, businesses, and public services.
