Hialeah is the U.S. city with the highest proportion of Hispanic residents: roughly 95% identify as such, and the Cuban community forms its historical foundation. The city was the preferred destination of Cuban migration waves from the 1960s onward, with new arrivals following the economic crisis of 2020.
Beyond Cubans, there are Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Dominicans, Colombians, Venezuelans, and Mexicans. Neighborhoods such as Hialeah Gardens, West Hialeah, and the downtown area reflect this mix. The non-Hispanic presence is small but includes Americans, Haitians, and some Arab families.
Spanish is the absolute dominant language. Many businesses do not operate in English. Portuguese speakers are understood with ease. The socioeconomic profile is predominantly working class, with small and medium family-owned businesses spread throughout the municipality.
