What Is the I-551 Stamp
The I-551 stamp, also known as the ADIT stamp (Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunication), is a stamp issued by USCIS or CBP (Customs and Border Protection) directly in the permanent resident’s passport. It serves as temporary proof of Lawful Permanent Resident status in the United States, replacing the physical Green Card until the definitive card is produced and delivered.
In practice, the stamp functions as a temporary Green Card for all legal purposes. Employers, banks, government agencies, and airlines must accept it as valid proof of permanent residency throughout its validity period.
When the Stamp Is Issued
The most common situation occurs upon the first entry into the US with an immigrant visa. Upon arrival, the CBP officer at the port of entry stamps the passport, officially marking the start of permanent residency. This stamp, combined with the MRIV (Machine-Readable Immigrant Visa), serves as proof of status for up to one year from the date of admission.
Another frequent situation is after the approval of adjustment of status via form I-485 within the United States. When the physical Green Card has not yet been produced, the resident can request the stamp at a USCIS office, especially if urgent proof of status is needed for employment or travel.
The stamp is also used by permanent residents whose Green Card has expired, been lost, or stolen and who are awaiting the issuance of a new card via form I-90. Additionally, residents with a pending I-751 petition (removal of conditions) or N-400 (naturalization) and an expired Green Card can obtain the ADIT stamp as temporary proof of status.

Validity and Duration of the Stamp

If the stamp is close to expiring and the Green Card has not yet arrived, the resident should act before expiration. ADIT Stamp by Mail

This option is available for those with a pending I-90, I-751, or N-400 form and whose Green Card and extension notice have already expired.
To use this service, the resident must call the USCIS Contact Center. An officer will verify identity, physical address, and whether the location can receive deliveries via UPS or FedEx. If there is no need for an in-person appointment, the USCIS office will issue the stamp on an I-94 form with the resident’s photo obtained from internal systems, DHS seal, and the ADIT stamp, sending the document by express delivery service.
Valid Passport Is Mandatory
The I-551 stamp can only be applied to a valid passport. Permanent residents with an expired passport must renew it at the consulate or embassy of their country of origin before requesting the ADIT stamp. It is important to ensure that the passport is valid for the entire transition period until the physical Green Card arrives.
For residents who need to travel urgently and cannot renew their passport in time, it is advisable to consult the local USCIS office about available documentary alternatives. In exceptional situations, the office may provide guidance on specific temporary options for each case.
When to Seek Help from USCIS
If the physical Green Card is not delivered within the expected timeframe, the resident should check the case status on the USCIS online portal or through the Contact Center. In some cases, it may be necessary to open a service request to investigate the delay in production or delivery of the card. Delays of more than 90 days after approval generally justify proactive contact.
Residents facing travel or employment emergencies and who do not have valid proof of status should request an urgent appointment at the nearest office. USCIS can issue the stamp on the same day in cases of proven need, such as a time-sensitive job offer or travel for medical or family reasons.
