There is no formally required minimum experience to apply for the O-1. This category does not work with a fixed number of years in the field: what it evaluates is whether you have demonstrated extraordinary ability and recognized achievement in your area.
Instead of career length, the weight falls on evidence. A consistent track record of accomplishments typically matters more than many years without notable distinction. Examples of evidence that strengthen a case include:
- Awards and recognitions relevant to your field.
- Publications, citations, or participation as an expert or judge.
- Recommendation letters from respected figures in the industry.
- Concrete results that demonstrate impact and leadership.
In other words, a short but demonstrably excellent trajectory can support a petition, while a long career without strong evidence tends to weaken one. Each case is evaluated individually.
Since the criteria are assessed on a case-by-case basis, it is worth reviewing your profile with a specialist and checking the latest USCIS guidelines before filing.
