Do you need to renew your visa when leaving the United States?

Leaving the United States does not require you to go through a renewal process for your H-1B visa. The visa stamp in your passport has its own expiration date and does not renew automatically with each trip.

In practice, what matters is whether your visa is still valid at the time of your return:

• If the H-1B is still valid, you can re-enter normally without renewing it.
• If it expires while you are abroad, you will need to apply for a new visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate before returning.
• This applies even if your H-1B status remains approved in government records: the approved petition and the visa stamp in your passport are two separate things.
