Is a financial sponsor required, like in the family-based process?

No. EB-2 NIW does not require the type of financial sponsor that appears in family-based processes. This is precisely one of the features that makes this pathway attractive: it allows for self-petition.

In family-based petitions, there is typically a sponsor who assumes financial responsibility for the immigrant. With EB-2 NIW, the applicant can petition on their own behalf, without relying on an employer offering a job or a relative guaranteeing financial support. What the authority assesses is the national relevance of your work and your ability to carry it out, based on your background, experience, and the impact you demonstrate. The absence of a financial sponsor does not weaken the petition under this category.
