Rutland Demographics: A City in Transition
Around 15,000 residents, mostly white and working class, with a small but growing refugee and Latino immigrant community tied to seasonal employment at Killington.
Rutland has historically been an industrial and working-class city, with strong Italian (marble quarry workers) and French-Canadian heritage. Today, the population remains predominantly white, though the city faces population decline and aging demographics.
In 2016, Mayor Chris Louras attempted to resettle Syrian refugees, a program ultimately canceled under local pressure. Even so, Rutland receives Latino seasonal workers for Killington and a small number of Asian families.
Religion follows an established pattern: Catholicism (strong Italian heritage), historic Protestantism, and a growing share of the population with no religious affiliation. There is one synagogue and no local mosque.
