Hastings has a white majority with strong German, Irish, Scandinavian, and Czech roots. Older neighborhoods preserve Victorian homes built by prosperous families in the late 19th century.
The Latino community has grown over the past two decades, tied to agriculture, food processing, and construction. Mexicans and Central Americans form a visible community, with restaurants, grocery stores, and some dedicated churches. Diversity is still lower than in Grand Island, but it is growing.
English is the dominant language. Spanish appears in workplaces and Hispanic commerce. Religious life is predominantly Christian: Catholic (strong presence, with the Diocese of Grand Island headquartered here), Lutheran (ELCA, LCMS), Baptist, Methodist, with evangelical churches and some Hispanic congregations.
