Demographic composition of Woodbury and immigrant communities
An upper-middle-class white base with a growing presence of Asian families (Indian, Chinese, Hmong, Korean) and African communities, primarily Liberian and Somali, from the western metro. Approximately 25% of the population is non-white.
Woodbury began as an almost entirely white suburb with Scandinavian, German, and Anglo-American roots. Starting in the 2000s, the expansion of corporate employment in the East Metro (Maplewood, Oakdale) and the arrival of skilled professionals from around the world shifted the profile. Racial diversity increased substantially and continues to rise.
The Indian community is now one of the most visible in Woodbury, with a notable presence in neighborhoods such as Eagle Ridge and neighboring Cottage Grove. Hindu temples are located nearby, and markets such as India Bazaar serve the community well. Chinese, Korean, Hmong, and Vietnamese residents form other significant Asian layers. Liberian, Somali, and Ethiopian communities are growing in smaller but steady numbers.
Mexican Latino residents have a presence in construction and services, without a defined ethnic neighborhood. Brazilians are few and dispersed, generally connected to corporate sectors. The age profile skews young for a suburb, with many families with young children and public schools filled with large classes.
