Demographic composition of Woodbury and immigrant communities

An upper-middle-class white base with a growing presence of Asian families (Indian, Chinese, Hmong, Korean) and African communities, primarily Liberian and Somali, from the western metro. Approximately 25% of the population is non-white.

Woodbury began as an almost entirely white suburb with Scandinavian, German, and Anglo-American roots. Starting in the 2000s, the expansion of corporate employment in the East Metro (Maplewood, Oakdale) and the arrival of skilled professionals from around the world shifted the profile. Racial diversity increased substantially and continues to rise.

The Indian community is now one of the most visible in Woodbury, with a notable presence in neighborhoods such as Eagle Ridge and neighboring Cottage Grove. Hindu temples are located nearby, and markets such as India Bazaar serve the community well. Chinese, Korean, Hmong, and Vietnamese residents form other significant Asian layers. Liberian, Somali, and Ethiopian communities are growing in smaller but steady numbers.

Mexican Latino residents have a presence in construction and services, without a defined ethnic neighborhood. Brazilians are few and dispersed, generally connected to corporate sectors. The age profile skews young for a suburb, with many families with young children and public schools filled with large classes.

Cost of living in Woodbury compared to Minneapolis and St. Paul

Cost of living above St. Paul proper and comparable to Plymouth on the other side of the metro. Housing is the main expense, especially in neighborhoods near the eastern border with Lake Elmo. Property taxes are high.

Woodbury is not an inexpensive city. Rental and home purchase costs are clearly above the state average, with premium neighborhoods reaching Plymouth or Edina price ranges. In exchange, the value proposition is strong because schools, parks, and urban infrastructure are top-tier. For corporate professionals with solid salaries, Woodbury is an attractive destination.

For groceries, Lunds & Byerlys (a gourmet chain), Cub Foods, Costco, Target, Hy-Vee, and Aldi cover the basics. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are in St. Paul, 15 minutes away. Ethnic Indian markets such as India Bazaar serve the growing Asian community. Dining out ranges from premium chain options to local spots like Brick & Bourbon, McLain's Public House, and various Asian restaurants.

Gas heating through CenterPoint weighs heavily from November to April. Electricity through Xcel Energy is reasonable. Property taxes in Washington County are high, particularly in newer neighborhoods with excellent schools, but justified for families with children. Car insurance follows the state standard. Overall, costs run higher than St. Paul proper, with a clear return in urban infrastructure.

Real estate market and recommended neighborhoods in Woodbury

Housing stock dominated by homes built between the 1990s and 2020, with well-planned subdivisions. Premium neighborhoods around Tamarack Village, Eagle Valley, and Bailey Lake. Rental inventory is limited to newer complexes at City Centre.

Woodbury is the eastern equivalent of what Plymouth is in the west: a suburb of modern subdivisions with four- to five-bedroom homes, double or triple garages, and large yards. Tamarack Village, Eagle Valley, and Bailey Lake form the premium axis. Neighborhoods such as Powers Lake and Stonemill Farms are also sought after. Bielenberg, Wedgewood, and Royal Oaks are traditional and well established.

The newest neighborhoods are in the east, near the Lake Elmo border, with large homes in subdivisions built after 2010. The Preserve at Eagle Valley and Carriage Hill are examples. For rentals, complexes such as The Hawthorne and Liberty on the Lake (in the neighboring city) meet growing demand. City Centre, at the city's commercial core, has new apartments with gym facilities and full amenities.

Purchasing an upper-middle-class home with four bedrooms is the local standard. Property taxes in South Washington County are considerable but worthwhile for the schools. South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo) covers a large portion of Woodbury and is considered a strong district. It is worth verifying the school zone before closing, as the city falls under more than one district.

3M's headquarters in neighboring Maplewood influences the local economy. Strong presence in healthcare with Woodwinds Hospital, corporate retail, financial services, and technology. Robust professional job market, limited entry-level options.

Woodbury does not have the same volume of Fortune 500 headquarters as Minneapolis or St. Paul, but the local economy is strong. 3M, headquartered in Maplewood (10 minutes away), employs many Woodbury residents. HealthPartners operates the Woodwinds Health Campus, an important regional hospital. Imation, though reduced in recent years, still maintains a local presence. Reeb Millwork and various smaller companies round out the industrial picture.

In financial services, several bank branches and operations from Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, and Securian (headquartered in nearby St. Paul) employ professionals. In technology, the growth of the East Metro brought smaller software and data offices to the area. For corporate retail, Woodbury Lakes outdoor mall and Tamarack Village concentrate brand operations.

For newly arrived immigrants, entry-level positions in Woodbury exist in residential construction (in strong expansion), restaurants, retail, hospitality, and commercial cleaning, but in smaller volume than in Brooklyn Park or Minneapolis proper. For skilled professionals with fluent English, there are good opportunities in healthcare, technology, engineering, finance, and medicine in the surrounding area.

Safety in Woodbury

One of the safest cities in Minnesota, consistently listed among the safest in the United States. Violent crime is virtually nonexistent, with minor property crime occurring in commercial parking lots.

Woodbury consistently appears on lists of the safest large cities in the United States. Violent crime is extremely rare. The municipal police department is well funded through high property taxes, and emergency response times are considered short. The department maintains a visible presence in parks, schools, and commercial areas, with strong cooperation from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The most common crime is property-related: vehicle break-ins with valuables in plain sight in the parking lots of Tamarack Village, Woodbury Lakes, and City Centre; package theft at residences (rising with online shopping); and daytime residential burglaries when homes are unoccupied. Catalytic converter theft is a sporadic problem. Police recommend Ring cameras and steering wheel locks.

For immigrant families arriving, the overall sense of safety is very high. Children ride bikes through neighborhoods without significant concern. Municipal parks such as Carver Lake Park, Bailey Lake Park, and Tamarack Nature Preserve are used without incident. At night, residential streets are practically empty. Basic precautions suffice.

For most families, two cars are standard. MSP airport is 25 minutes away via I-494. Cycling is feasible in summer with the Hardwood Creek Regional Trail, Tamarack Nature Preserve, and the municipal greenway network. Winter limits use. Parking is ample throughout the city.
