Diverse population with strong Asian and Middle Eastern presence

Novi has one of the largest Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Middle Eastern communities in the state, reflecting the technical profile of employers in the region.

The city is home to approximately 66,000 residents and has a fairly diverse profile by Michigan standards. About one quarter of the population is of Asian descent, with particularly strong Indian and Chinese communities, drawn by positions in automotive engineering and information technology.

There is also a long-standing presence of Middle Eastern families, particularly Lebanese, Syrian, and Iraqi, part of the large Arab-American diaspora of southeastern Michigan. Japanese and Korean communities are also visible, connected to suppliers for Asian automakers based in the area.

The median age is typical of a family suburb, with many middle-class and upper-middle-class households. English predominates, but it is common to hear Hindi, Mandarin, Arabic, and Japanese in schools, temples, ethnic markets, and community centers throughout the city.

Medium-high cost by Michigan standards, affordable by national standards

Living in Novi costs more than the Michigan average, but remains well below coastal American cities, with a good balance between price and quality of life.

The cost of living in Novi is above the Michigan average, driven primarily by housing and property taxes. Engineering, IT, and finance salaries in the metropolitan area tend to offset this gap for dual-income households.

Groceries, transportation, and services are close to the national average. Restaurants vary considerably: chain restaurants at Twelve Oaks Mall are moderately priced, while Indian, Chinese, and Japanese restaurants along Grand River Avenue offer affordable and authentic options.

Energy, winter heating, and car insurance weigh on the budget. Michigan has some of the highest auto insurance rates in the United States, something that catches many newcomers off guard and needs to be factored into financial planning from the very first month.

Spacious homes, planned communities, and few apartments

Large single-family homes in planned subdivisions predominate; apartment rentals exist but represent a minority of the overall housing stock.

Novi's real estate stock is dominated by single-family homes built from the 1990s onward, in planned subdivisions with curved streets, green areas, and sometimes lakes or golf courses. Neighborhoods such as Island Lake of Novi, Tollgate Woods, and Maybury Park Estates are popular choices among families.

Apartments and more compact condominiums exist near Twelve Oaks and along Novi Road, a common option for newcomers still getting settled or for professionals without children. Rents are higher than in neighboring cities such as Farmington Hills or Wixom.

To purchase, expect a process involving 30-year financing, thorough inspections, and significant property taxes. Many immigrants start by renting for one or two years before buying, to understand the local market and the real impact of annual maintenance costs.

Hub for automotive engineering, global suppliers, and R&D

Market driven by automotive suppliers, Japanese and Korean engineering offices, large-scale retail, and professional services.

Novi is one of the preferred addresses for global automotive industry suppliers. Companies such as ZF, Harman, Bosch, Magna, and Adient maintain engineering, R&D, or administrative operations in the city, attracting mechanical, electrical, embedded software, and quality engineers.

There is also a strong presence of Japanese and Korean companies serving Asian automakers based in the United States. This partly explains the Japanese community, with its own dedicated school and supermarkets, and the constant demand for bilingual professionals in technical fields.

Beyond manufacturing, the retail, hospitality, healthcare, and professional services sectors generate many jobs. Twelve Oaks Mall, regional hospitals, and the Suburban Collection Showplace convention center employ thousands in full-time and part-time positions.

High-performing public schools and proximity to top universities

Novi Community School District is among the most highly rated in Michigan; higher education is accessible at nearby prestigious universities.

Novi Community School District is frequently cited among the best in the state, with high scores on standardized tests and a strong offering of advanced courses, robotics, and language programs. Many families choose Novi specifically for the school district and its safe environment.

For high school, Detroit Catholic Central High School is also an option, one of the most traditional Catholic private schools in the region. International schools such as Hinoki International School serve Japanese families who maintain ties to their home country's educational system.

Higher education is easily accessible: the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan State in East Lansing, Wayne State in Detroit, Oakland University in Rochester, and Schoolcraft College are all within an hour's drive, significantly expanding options for teenagers and young adults.

Regional hospital network with broad coverage and strong specialties

Healthcare access is facilitated by large hospitals in neighboring cities and clinics throughout the municipality, with coverage typically provided through private or employer plans.

Novi is served by Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi, with an emergency department, maternity ward, surgery, and cardiology. In neighboring cities such as Farmington Hills, Wixom, and West Bloomfield, larger hospitals from the Henry Ford Health, Trinity Health, and Corewell Health networks cover virtually all specialties.

Most residents have employer-sponsored health insurance, the American standard. Immigrants arriving for work generally receive coverage as part of their compensation package, but it is essential to understand deductibles, copays, and in-network providers before using non-emergency services.

There is a strong supply of primary care clinics, urgent care centers open into the evening, dentists, ophthalmologists, and physicians with various cultural specialties (Indian, Chinese, and Arab doctors), which facilitates culturally sensitive care and sometimes services in languages beyond English.

One of the safest cities in southeastern Michigan

Crime rates are low by metropolitan standards; the most common issues are petty theft in parking lots and online fraud.

Novi regularly appears in rankings of Michigan's safest cities. The local police department is well-equipped, response times are short, and the residential environment is quiet, with low incidence of violent crime compared to central Detroit areas.

The most common issues involve thefts in shopping center parking lots, particularly around Twelve Oaks Mall during peak dates, as well as minor vehicle break-ins when visible items are left in cars. Online and phone scams also appear as frequent occurrences.

For immigrants accustomed to large cities with high urban tension, Novi tends to feel extremely safe. That said, basic precautions remain advisable: locking the car, not leaving packages on the porch for extended periods, and exercising extra caution during busy periods at the shopping center.

Safer neighborhoods
  • Island Lake of Novi
  • Tollgate Woods
  • Maybury Park Estates
  • Bristol Corners
  • Beck North
Areas to avoid

  • Remote spots in industrial parks outside business hours

Car-dependent city with excellent highway access

Mobility depends almost entirely on a personal vehicle; public transportation is limited, but highway access is excellent.

Like most of Detroit's suburbs, Novi was designed for the automobile. The main thoroughfares are I-96, M-5, Grand River Avenue, and Novi Road, connecting the city quickly to Farmington Hills, Ann Arbor, downtown Detroit, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Public transportation is available via SMART Bus, but the network is limited and primarily geared toward regional commuting. For newcomers, purchasing or renting a car shortly after moving is practically essential for daily family life.

There are some bike paths and trails, such as the Novi Trails Network and segments of the ITC Community Trail, used more for recreation than commuting. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is approximately 40 minutes away by car and is one of Delta Air Lines' major hubs.

Blend of American suburban culture, ethnic festivals, and large events

Cultural life is a combination of community events, multicultural festivals, amateur sports, and major trade shows at the Suburban Collection Showplace.

Despite lacking a traditional historic downtown, Novi cultivates an active cultural life centered around its parks and the Suburban Collection Showplace, which hosts car shows, weddings, bridal expos, garden fairs, and the well-known alternative Detroit Auto Show in select years.

Festivals such as the nearby Michigan Renaissance Festival, Hindu events during Diwali, Chinese New Year celebrations, and Arab festivals reflect the city's cultural diversity. Hindu temples, mosques, gurdwaras, and churches of various denominations mark the city's calendar.

The culinary scene mirrors this diversity. South and north Indian restaurants, Korean barbecue, authentic Japanese ramen, Lebanese kebab, and Detroit-style pizzerias all coexist alongside traditional American chain restaurants, creating a vibrant mix of Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines.

Shopping, urban lakes, and large-scale events

Attractions combine major shopping centers, urban parks with lakes, trails, and the Suburban Collection Showplace events complex.

Novi's signature attraction is Twelve Oaks Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the state, with anchor stores, a movie theater, restaurants, and seasonal events. Neighboring it, the Suburban Collection Showplace hosts car shows, weddings, themed exhibitions, and concerts throughout the year.

For nature enthusiasts, Maybury State Park and Lakeshore Park offer trails, lakes, picnic areas, and bike paths. Pavilion Shore Park, on the shores of Walled Lake, is a gathering spot for Fourth of July fireworks and small community festivals in summer.

Other popular destinations include Funtasia Family Fun Park for children, Links of Novi for golfers, and Hindu temples and cultural centers such as Bharatiya Temple, which open their doors to visitors interested in the Indian religious life of the region.

Global community led by Indians, Chinese, Japanese, and Arabs

Novi has one of the largest concentrations of Asian immigrants in the state, with dedicated temples, markets, and ethnic schools.

The immigrant presence in Novi is well above the Michigan average. Indians form one of the most visible communities, with active temples, markets, restaurants, and cultural associations. Chinese, with their own supermarkets and weekend schools, and Japanese, with a dedicated school and market, complete the strongest Asian trio.

The Arab diaspora of southeastern Michigan also has a notable presence in Novi, primarily Lebanese, Syrian, and Iraqi families who moved from the Dearborn area to suburbs in search of better schools. There are also smaller but significant communities from Korea, the Philippines, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Latin American and European immigrants appear in smaller numbers and tend to connect with regional multicultural associations. Together, this creates an environment where being a foreigner is common and well-accepted, which typically shortens the adjustment curve significantly for newcomers.
