Alexandria's Population: African American Majority with Deep Southern Roots
A city with an African American majority, a significant white community, and a slowly growing Hispanic population. The military legacy of England AFB remains visible in families who chose to remain in the area after the base closed.
Alexandria has an African American majority, a historical legacy of central Louisiana, a region with strong agricultural traditions and Southern culture. The white community is large and concentrated in specific neighborhoods and suburbs. Pineville, across the river, has a slightly different demographic profile.
The Hispanic presence is growing slowly, primarily Mexican and Central American, with families drawn by work in agriculture, construction, and food processing. Latin markets and taquerias have appeared along MacArthur Drive and in other commercial corridors.
The legacy of the former England Air Force Base, closed in 1992, is still present in families that chose to settle in the area after deactivation. Brazilians are rare, and Asian and South Asian communities are small, with a presence linked mainly to healthcare. Most new diversity comes through the regional universities.
