Stable University Population on a Conservative Rural Base
Murray has around 17,000 residents, with a strong presence of university students and faculty over a rural, conservative local base typical of western Kentucky.
The population fluctuates considerably between the academic year and summer because of Murray State University, which alone enrolls around nine thousand students. Outside campus, the city is predominantly white, with smaller African American, Latino, and Asian communities, many of them connected to the university and the regional hospital.
English is the dominant language in virtually every everyday context. Spanish appears in some businesses and churches, and the university attracts international students from countries such as India, China, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil, creating small multilingual pockets on campus and in nearby neighborhoods.
The religious profile is traditionally Christian, with strong Baptist and Methodist presences, a common heritage in Bible Belt cities. Catholic, Presbyterian, Episcopal, and several Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist communities organized around the university are also present.
