Downers Grove Township is diverse and highly educated
Downers Grove Township has roughly 150,000 residents. Non-Hispanic whites form the majority, with a strong and growing Asian presence (Indian, Korean, Chinese). Latino and African American populations are smaller. Hinsdale is predominantly white and affluent.
The population is among the most educated in the United States, reflecting a concentration of corporate employment and proximity to Northwestern, UChicago, and UIUC. Non-Hispanic whites form the majority, with Downers Grove and Westmont at around 75 to 80 percent. Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills have an even higher proportion.
The Indian community is growing, with families settling in Woodridge, Downers Grove, and nearby Lisle. Regional Hindu temples are located in Lemont (nearby) and Aurora. The Korean community is concentrated in Westmont and Woodridge, with restaurants and markets along Ogden Avenue. The Italian community has deep roots in Westmont, which hosts an annual Italian festival.
English dominates. Hindi, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, and Polish appear in local commerce and media. The Brazilian community is small but includes families in condominiums in Woodridge and Westmont. Catholic parishes (including ethnic ones), mainline Protestant congregations, and Hindu and Buddhist temples serve a broad range of religious traditions.
