Demographic profile in rapid transformation
A historically white and African American city diversifying with the arrival of Hispanic, Asian, and professionals transferred from greater Atlanta over the past fifteen years.
Newnan has about 45,000 residents, with a predominantly white population followed by a significant African American community dating to the post-Reconstruction era. The Hispanic population is growing consistently, now close to 10%, concentrated in neighborhoods on the east side and in areas near Coweta County's industrial hubs.
English is the dominant language, but Spanish is already visible in commercial signage, churches, and public schools. The Coweta County school system offers ESOL programs, and Newnan High School has classes representing twenty or more nationalities. The South Asian and Southeast Asian presence has grown alongside the expansion of jobs in technology and healthcare.
The city has a strong religious tradition rooted in Southern Baptist and Methodist denominations, with historic churches downtown such as First United Methodist and Central Baptist. Catholic, Hispanic evangelical, and Korean congregations are gaining ground, reflecting the demographic shift of the past two decades.
