Migrant communities in Riverside
Riverside is home to about 70,000 foreign-born residents, a little more than a fifth of the city. The largest community is Mexican, with deep roots in Casa Blanca and Eastside, neighborhoods built by citrus grove workers since the early 20th century. Salvadorans and Guatemalans arrived in waves through the 1980s and 1990s, fleeing civil conflicts, and today occupy the Northside and La Sierra. The Filipino community, present since the farm era and reinforced by retired service members from March Air Reserve Base, lives mainly in Orangecrest and Canyon Crest. Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Indian populations grew alongside the expansion of UC Riverside, in Canyon Crest and University. Hondurans, Cubans and Venezuelans form more recent waves.
Riverside has no career consulates; formal services take place in Los Angeles, about an hour away. Community support is strong. TODEC Legal Team, based in nearby Perris, has worked for more than thirty years on deportation defense, citizenship applications, DACA and farm worker protection, with a mobile office serving Riverside. The Inland Empire Immigrant Youth Collective organizes undocumented youth in statewide campaigns and provides scholarships. Catholic Charities San Bernardino & Riverside Counties offers social services, emergency aid and low-cost immigration assistance. Churches, farm worker unions and student centers at UC Riverside complete the support network.
