Migrant communities in Daly City

Daly City sits just south of San Francisco, in San Mateo County, and is one of the most immigrant-dense cities in all of California: about 56% of residents were born abroad. The local identity is strongly Filipino; an estimated 37% of residents are of Filipino descent, making the city the largest Filipino concentration in the United States. The older waves began in the 1960s and 1970s, with families arriving in search of more affordable housing than in San Francisco; new waves accelerated from the 1990s onward, tied to nursing visas, family reunification, and healthcare professionals. Neighborhoods such as Westlake, Serramonte, and Northgate are packed with Filipino supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants, and cultural centers, alongside Chinese, Latino, and Pacific Islander communities.

Even as a mid-sized city, Daly City hosts a dense support network. Local Catholic parishes, community newspapers, schools with bilingual programs, and ethnic organizations offer guidance for newcomers. Consular appointments and most immigration services are handled in neighboring San Francisco, a few minutes away by BART. New arrivals often start in shared housing, then move to apartments near BART to reach jobs at hospitals, hotels, retail, and SFO airport services. There is also a strong presence of tech professionals who choose Daly City for its lower cost and its proximity to both San Francisco and the Peninsula.
