University Heights population: young families, academics, and immigrants through SINP
A young sector with families with children, many U of S professors and researchers, and a strong wave of Filipino, Indian, and Chinese immigrants.
University Heights attracts young families looking for new homes, nearby schools, and a suburban atmosphere. Many residents work at the University of Saskatchewan, the Royal University Hospital, or companies at Innovation Place, all on the same side of the river. The average age is lower than in traditional neighborhoods like Nutana, with a strong presence of children.
Recent immigration is led by arrivals from the Philippines, India, Pakistan, China, South Korea, and Nigeria, largely through the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program. Evergreen and Aspen Ridge have high concentrations of recent immigrants. Sikh gurdwaras, Hindu temples, mosques, and Korean churches in other parts of the city serve these communities. The Brazilian community is small, numbering a few dozen families.
English is the dominant language. Tagalog, Punjabi, Mandarin, Urdu, Korean, and Arabic are spoken in immigrant households. Families with Ukrainian, German, and British roots coexist with the newer wave of arrivals. International students and academic professionals from the U of S reside in Silverspring and Forest Grove, close to campus.
