Who lives in Sherwood: middle-class Canadian families and recent immigration

Majority white, descendants of British and Irish settlers, with recent growth in Filipino, Indian, and Chinese families through the PEI PNP.

Sherwood is a neighborhood with a traditional Canadian profile, with a white majority of British, Irish, and Scottish descent. Families established for generations share streets with young professionals who have moved in over the past 10 to 15 years. The average age is balanced, with a good number of children in local schools.

In recent years, with the arrival of immigrants through the PEI Provincial Nominee Program and the Atlantic Immigration Program, the neighborhood has received Filipino, Indian, and Chinese families. Some work in hospitality and service, others in technical and administrative positions. The Brazilian community in Sherwood is small, generally connected to students or technology workers.

English is completely dominant. French immersion education is offered at some schools for those who want bilingual children. The dominant religion is Christian (Roman Catholic, United Church of Canada, Anglican), with a growing presence of Hindus and Muslims among recent immigrant families.

Cost of living in Sherwood: Charlottetown standard, more affordable than downtown

Rent is more affordable than in central Charlottetown. Food, transportation, and taxes follow the capital's standard.

Sherwood is somewhat less expensive than central Charlottetown for housing. One-bedroom apartments range from CAD 1,300 to CAD 1,700 per month, and three-bedroom family homes go for CAD 1,900 to CAD 2,500. Townhouses and duplexes are intermediate options. Buying a home in the neighborhood is more affordable than in Brighton or Downtown.

Grocery shopping in Sherwood is well covered. Atlantic Superstore, Sobeys, and the Asian T&T (in some regional malls) handle daily needs. Fruits, fresh vegetables, and dairy become more expensive in winter, with almost everything imported from the mainland via Confederation Bridge. A meal at a casual restaurant costs CAD 18 to CAD 28 per person.

A car is very helpful, even with public transit available. Fuel, insurance, and maintenance add up in the monthly budget. Heating in winter (fuel oil or electricity) rises in January and February. HST of 15% applies to almost everything, and basic groceries are exempt.

Housing in Sherwood: family homes and duplexes, low density

Neighborhood dominated by single-story and two-story homes on residential streets. Some apartments and townhouses appear in newer zones.

Sherwood has a clearly suburban profile: wood-frame or vinyl-siding homes, two stories, basements, garages for one or two cars, front and back yards. Streets such as Sherwood Road, Maypoint Road, and Mt. Edward Road form the main structure, interspersed with schools, parks, and grocery stores.

There are also townhouses, duplexes, and some low-rise apartment buildings, especially near Charlottetown Mall and Sherwood Crossing. These options suit young professionals and older residents seeking lower maintenance. For families with children, the quieter residential streets (Birchwood, Maypoint, Mt. Stewart) are preferred for their proximity to schools.

Renting a house has become competitive in recent years. Vacancy has dropped, and landlords ask for proof of income, references, and generally a half-month deposit. Common sites for searching include Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, and PEI Rental Registry. Buying is straightforward for foreigners, with no restrictions, with mortgages starting at 20% down for residents at banks such as Royal Bank, Scotiabank, TD, and BMO.

Recommended neighborhoods
  • Sherwood (residential center, near schools)
  • Birchwood (quiet, tree-lined streets)
  • Mt. Edward (near the mall)
  • Parkdale (neighboring area, affordable)
  • Maypoint (close to Confederation Trail)

Job market in Sherwood: most residents work in central Charlottetown

Sherwood is a residential neighborhood. Local jobs are in retail and schools, and most of the workforce commutes to the capital's center.

Sherwood has no major employers of its own. It is a residential neighborhood where most residents work elsewhere in Charlottetown, primarily in the provincial government, Health PEI, UPEI, offices, and downtown restaurants.

Local jobs are concentrated in retail: Charlottetown Mall, Atlantic Superstore, Sobeys, stores at Sherwood Crossing, Tim Hortons, restaurants, and pharmacies. Public schools (Sherwood Elementary, West Royalty Elementary, Stonepark Intermediate) and some medical and dental clinics also employ neighborhood residents.

For technical and administrative professionals, most drive to downtown in 10 to 15 minutes. Salaries follow the island standard, between CAD 45,000 and CAD 70,000 per year in office positions, below what is paid in Halifax or Toronto, but balanced with a cost of living still lower than in large cities.

Education in Sherwood: neighborhood public schools and UPEI right next door

The neighborhood has decent public schools, and the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is practically next door.

Resident children have free access to the Public Schools Branch system. Schools such as Sherwood Elementary, West Royalty Elementary, and Stonepark Intermediate serve the neighborhood. French immersion education is offered at some schools for those who want bilingual children. For high school, students attend Charlottetown Rural High School or Colonel Gray High School.

The major advantage is the proximity of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), which is 5 minutes by car. It is the only university in the province, with about 5,500 students and strong programs in veterinary medicine (Atlantic Veterinary College), nursing, business (School of Business), and sciences.

Holland College, the province's community college, is also in Charlottetown, with a nearby campus. It offers one- to two-year technical programs in culinary arts, law enforcement, design, hospitality, and construction, attracting many international students who are considering permanent residency through the PEI PNP.

Healthcare in Sherwood: Queen Elizabeth Hospital practically next door

The neighborhood is close to the province's main hospital. Clinics and walk-ins in the area cover day-to-day needs.

The system is universal under Health PEI, free for permanent residents and work permit holders with more than six months of coverage, after a three-month waiting period. Private insurance is recommended in the first months after arriving in the province.

The major advantage of Sherwood is its proximity to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Prince Edward Island's main hospital, with 24-hour emergency, maternity, surgeries, and cancer treatment. Very complex cases are transferred to Halifax. The hospital is 5 minutes by car from the neighborhood.

There are also private clinics, walk-in clinics, dentists, physiotherapists, and pharmacies (Shoppers Drug Mart, Lawtons) spread throughout the neighborhood and at Charlottetown Mall. Getting a family doctor is a challenge, with a long wait at the PEI Patient Registry. Maple (telemedicine) helps with simple cases. Medications are not covered by default.

Safety in Sherwood: a quiet neighborhood in a safe city

Violent crime is extremely rare. Minor theft and occasional vandalism occur, but nothing that affects the sense of security.

Sherwood is considered one of the safest neighborhoods in Charlottetown, and the city is already among the safest provincial capitals in Canada. Violent crime is extremely rare, and residents often leave bicycles in the yard unlocked. Children walk around the neighborhood and go to school on foot or by bike without major concerns.

The most reported crimes are minor car break-ins (nothing should be left visible), occasional vandalism in parks, and sporadic garage break-ins. Charlottetown Police Services maintain good coverage in the neighborhood and fast response times. Cameras at businesses cover busy areas such as Charlottetown Mall.

The real risk is winter: snowstorms, icy sidewalks, and power outages from trees falling in Atlantic winds. In January and February, the neighborhood can be partially isolated for a few hours until plows come through. Having winter tires and a basic food supply on hand is standard local practice.

Transportation in Sherwood: T3 Transit bus and mild car dependence

Bus coverage exists and connects to downtown. Almost everyone drives, but living without a car is possible with some effort.

Sherwood is better served by public transit than neighboring communities such as Cornwall or Stratford. T3 Transit operates routes connecting the neighborhood to Downtown Charlottetown, with stops at locations such as Charlottetown Mall and along Mt. Edward Road. Schedules and frequency are reasonable during the day, more limited at night and on weekends.

Most families own a car. Distances to work, school, and grocery stores are short, generally 10 to 15 minutes. Sherwood Road, Maypoint Road, and North River Road are the main routes, with good access to the Trans-Canada Highway. The Confederation Trail, a former railway converted into a multi-use path, crosses the area and is excellent for cycling in summer.

For flights, Charlottetown Airport (YYG) is 5 minutes by car from Sherwood, one of the neighborhood's advantages. There are direct flights to Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, and Ottawa, operated by Air Canada and WestJet. For international travel, connections are generally made in Toronto or Montreal.

What the climate is like living in Sherwood

Sherwood is a residential neighbourhood of Charlottetown and shares the same Atlantic oceanic climate: cool summers, long winters with snow, and persistent winds.

Summer in Sherwood is cool and familiar. From June to September, highs range between 72 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit, with breezes off the estuary. Residential parks and the Confederation Trail set the pace. Air conditioning is optional.

Winter is long. From December to March, highs range between 27 and 34 degrees Fahrenheit, with lows reaching 5 degrees Fahrenheit. The area receives around 114 inches of snow per year. Storms bring strong winds, and snow removal is a constant task.

Homes in Sherwood are suburban builds from the 1970s through the 2000s, typically heated with oil (the historic standard on PEI) or heat pumps. Enclosed garages are common in newer construction. Waterproof outerwear and a heavy parka are essential. The neighbourhood is quiet and a short distance from downtown Charlottetown.

Culture in Sherwood: neighborhood life with downtown culture 10 minutes away

A residential neighborhood with little culture of its own. All cultural life, festivals, and theater are in central Charlottetown.

Sherwood has no significant cultural scene of its own. Cultural life takes place in Downtown Charlottetown, 10 minutes away, with the Confederation Centre of the Arts, the Charlottetown Festival, the Anne of Green Gables musical, Old Home Week (agricultural fair in August), and the PEI International Shellfish Festival at the harbor.

What happens in Sherwood is neighborhood life: children's hockey tournaments at local arenas, school events, community gatherings in parks, seasonal markets, and walks along the Confederation Trail in summer. Churches and community centers organize dinners, lobster suppers in season, and bingos.

Local cuisine is the same as on the island: Atlantic seafood, PEI potatoes, COWS ice cream (which has a shop in Charlottetown), boiled lobster in the May and June season, and fish and chips. For dining out, everyone heads downtown, where there is more variety of restaurants, pubs, and cafes.

Sherwood, a residential community neighboring Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island

A small community adjoining the provincial capital of Charlottetown. Daily life blends with that of the main city, offering quiet streets, open roads, and easy access to the sea and inland fields.

Sherwood is a residential community woven into the urban fabric of Charlottetown, with spread-out housing and few commercial points of its own. Cultural life is a short drive away in the capital's downtown, where the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Province House National Historic Site, and Peake's Wharf harbour are located.

For Sherwood residents, the daily outing is along the Confederation Trail, a former railway converted into a cycling path that crosses the entire island. The Beach Grove Recreation Centre is in the immediate neighbourhood, with a pool and courts. In summer, the beaches at Brackley and Stanhope, within Prince Edward Island National Park, are twenty minutes away by car.

The calendar includes Old Home Week in August, featuring an agricultural fair and harness racing at the Charlottetown Driving Park, adjacent to Sherwood. Anne of Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish is the classic summer excursion. Markets such as the Charlottetown Farmers Market, held on Saturdays, draw families from across the area.
