The O-1 is designed for individuals who demonstrate extraordinary ability in their field, which in practice means documenting sustained recognition at the national or international level. For that reason, proof of distinction that is purely regional or local is generally not sufficient on its own to meet the visa standard.
That does not mean a regional achievement is irrelevant. It can be part of an overall evidence package, provided it is accompanied by elements that show reach and impact beyond the local level.
For athletes, documentation tends to be more persuasive when it combines different types of evidence, such as:
- Results and top placements in competitions of greater scale.
- Coverage in specialized media about your performance.
- Recommendation letters from recognized authorities in your sport.
- Awards and distinctions relevant to your sport.
Each petition is evaluated case by case by U.S. immigration authorities, who weigh the totality of the evidence. If your recognition is still primarily regional, it is worth building a clear narrative that connects that achievement to a broader significance and verifying the current criteria with USCIS or a specialist before filing.
