Not automatically. An injury or illness, no matter how serious, does not on its own extend your stay under the O-1 visa. The rules on authorized stay remain in effect, and any additional time depends on a formal request to immigration authorities.

Depending on the circumstances, it may be possible to request an extension or a change of status, but each case is reviewed individually and typically requires supporting documentation. Factors that generally weigh in the evaluation include:

  • The severity of the condition and how much it genuinely prevents travel.
  • The medical documentation supporting the request, such as physician reports.
  • Compliance with immigration rules and proper completion of the request.

For this reason, the best approach is to act early, before your authorized period expires, and to seek guidance from official sources or a qualified specialist before making any decisions. Every case is unique and deserves careful review.
