The L-1B can indeed support involvement in project work, but the answer depends on what kind of management is actually involved. The key distinction is between technically coordinating a project and performing administrative management of people and operations.

L visas are divided into two categories with distinct profiles:

  • L-1A: designed for executives and managers, covering team leadership, strategic decision-making, and administrative oversight.
  • L-1B: designed for those who hold specialized knowledge of the company’s products, processes, or operations.

When project management means applying that specialized knowledge, for example technically coordinating a complex project where the holder’s specific expertise is central to execution, there is room to fit it under the L-1B. When the role is primarily administrative and executive in nature, leading people and setting business direction, it more closely aligns with the L-1A.

Because immigration authorities evaluate each case based on the actual description of duties, it is important to clearly define the responsibilities and seek expert analysis before filing, so the visa category matches the work actually being performed.
