The L-1 is an intracompany transfer visa: it authorizes a professional to perform, within the United States, managerial, executive, or specialized knowledge functions at the parent, branch, or subsidiary of the same company. Physical presence in the country to work within the U.S. operation is a central part of the visa’s purpose.
For that reason, using the L-1 solely to work remotely while remaining outside the United States does not fit the purpose of the category. The benefit presupposes that the activity takes place in the United States, in service of the American unit that motivated the transfer.
Work performed outside the country, without a connection to the approved U.S. operation, may not satisfy the terms of the visa and can raise questions about your status. Mixed situations involving travel or periods of remote work need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
If your plan involves splitting time between countries or working remotely, it is worth confirming the current rules with USCIS or a specialist before taking action.
