When it comes to immigration to the United States, it is common to have doubts about the different types of visas and documents resulting from the process. One of these doubts is about the IR1 visa and whether it is just a visa or if it is already a physical card (like the Green Card).

The IR1 visa is intended for the spouse of an American citizen, when the marriage has already lasted at least two years. During the process, the US government grants the IR1 visa to allow the beneficiary to enter the country as a permanent resident. Initially, the visa is attached to the passport and functions as authorization to enter the United States.

However, after arrival, the new resident will undergo a procedure in which, in some cases, they will receive a stamp in the passport that acts as temporary proof of permanent resident status. Subsequently, the IR1 visa holder will receive, by mail, the physical card – the Green Card – which is the official and definitive proof of permanent resident status.

It is essential to emphasize the importance of strictly following US immigration laws. Therefore, it is always recommended that those interested rely only on official sources or consult qualified immigration law professionals, avoiding companies or marketing campaigns that promise results without due transparency. In this way, the risks of scams and unnecessary troubles are significantly reduced.

In summary, the IR1 is initially processed as a visa for entry into the country, but after arrival and fulfillment of the necessary procedures, the immigrant becomes the holder of a physical Green Card that certifies their authorization to reside permanently in the United States.
