What is the difference between USCIS and DOS?

DOS – Department of State – acts somewhat differently. This agency is responsible for foreign policy and coordinates the activities of the United States’ consulates and embassies in other countries. Regarding visas, DOS is in charge of issuing visa stamps on applicants” passports, a step that usually occurs after a petition has been approved by USCIS.

In other words, while USCIS reviews and approves applications made in the U.S., DOS handles the final step of the process abroad, allowing the worker”s entry into the country once the interview has been completed and consular requirements fulfilled.
