What is “optional practical training” (OPT)?

The “optional practical training” (OPT) is a work authorization for international students in the United States on an F-1 visa. It allows them to gain practical experience in the field of their current or recently completed program, serving as a bridge between academic training and the professional world.

During OPT, the student may work for a set period in a role directly related to their field of study. That connection to the area of study is a condition for the authorization to remain valid.
