The sponsor assumes a legal obligation when signing the I-864, but it is not lifelong; it ends when certain immigration conditions are met.

When we talk about family-based visas, one of the most important documents is Form I-864, known as the Affidavit of Support. This document creates a legal obligation for the sponsor, that is, the person who takes financial responsibility for the immigrant, ensuring that the immigrant does not become a public charge to the United States government.

It is important to understand that the commitment made by the sponsor when signing the I-864 is not, in every case, an absolute lifetime obligation. In other words, this responsibility has conditions under which it ends as certain events occur. According to immigration rules, the sponsor is required to maintain financial support until one of the specified conditions is met, for example: if the immigrant becomes a U.S. citizen, accumulates 40 quarters of work credits (approximately 10 years of social security contributions), permanently leaves the United States, or, in certain situations, if the sponsor passes away. Until one of these milestones is reached, the sponsor remains legally bound.

I emphasize the importance of carefully following United States immigration laws and seeking information from reliable sources. Mistakes at this stage can lead to future complications, so it is crucial to avoid scams and marketing campaigns promising easy or guaranteed solutions. If there are more specific doubts about your situation, consulting specialists on the subject can help clarify all points without creating unrealistic expectations.

Staying well informed and acting in accordance with established rules is the best way to ensure that immigration procedures occur without unforeseen problems. In this way, both the sponsor and the immigrant can have a clear understanding of their rights and obligations throughout the process.
