If I got married during F1 status, do I automatically become F3?

The category in the US immigration process is defined at the time the petition is filed; subsequent marriage does not automatically change status from F1 to F3, but it must be reported to the authorities.

Let”s start by understanding that, in United States immigration processes, the category in which you are classified is basically determined at the moment the petition (usually Form I-130) is filed. In the case of family petitions, for example, the F1 category is designated for unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens, while F3 is for married sons and daughters. Thus, if the petition was filed while you were single, this defines the classification, even if your marital status changes afterward.

In other words, if your I-130 was submitted under the F1 category and then you get married, your case does not automatically change to the F3 category. It is very important that throughout the process all relevant changes – such as a change in marital status – are communicated to immigration authorities, providing the appropriate documentation.

Therefore, even if the original petition was filed when you met the requirements for F1, this change can indeed have implications on the case review and timing, since F1 and F3 categories have different visa numbers and waiting periods.

We always recommend that everyone involved in immigration processes strictly follow the laws and guidelines established by the United States Department of Immigration. Look for updated information from official sources or consult specialized professionals in the field (avoiding suspicious offers or promises of guaranteed results) to evaluate your specific case safely. Accurate and timely communication of any changes in your process is crucial so that your situation is correctly analyzed according to current legislation.

Remember: each case is unique and, even though a change in marital status does not automatically alter your visa category, keeping clear records and following official guidance is essential to avoid future problems in the progress of your petition.
