Can F2A convert to IR-1 if the marriage reaches 2 years?

Family-based immigration in the United States offers several visa categories to reunite family members, and understanding the differences among them can clarify many doubts.

The F2A category, for example, is intended for spouses and children of lawful permanent residents (green card holders). However, when the sponsor naturalizes and becomes a U.S. citizen, the process can be reclassified into an immediate relative category – which applies to spouses of citizens.

Thus, if your case started as F2A, meaning the sponsor was still a permanent resident, it is possible to have a reclassification to spouse of citizen status if, during the process, the sponsor naturalizes and the marriage has already been consolidated for more than two years.
