What does ‘exceptional ability’ mean in EB-2?

In EB-2, exceptional ability describes a degree of expertise significantly above what is ordinarily found among professionals in the same field. The concept recognizes someone whose competence and track record stand out clearly from their peers.

The EB-2 category covers two profiles: professionals with an advanced degree and professionals with exceptional ability. When the petition is filed with the NIW (National Interest Waiver), the applicant may also seek a waiver of the job offer and labor certification requirements, provided they demonstrate the national importance of their work.

Exceptional ability is not proven by a single credential, but rather by a body of qualitative evidence, such as:
