My PhD took 10 years. Will the USCIS question why it took so long?

No. The USCIS does not define an ‘ideal’ length for a doctorate, so a longer duration, by itself, is not a problem. What the review seeks is to understand your trajectory and confirm that the path was legitimate and consistent with your academic output.

A PhD can extend for several valid reasons, and it is worth making them explicit in your documentation. Among them:

• Complex research involving data collection and analysis that requires more time.
• Shifts in focus or restructuring of the project along the way.
• Publications, collaborations, and milestones inherent to the graduate program.

In the context of EB-2 NIW, the most strategic approach is to turn that period into an argument in your favor: show how the experience deepened your expertise and supports the relevance of your work. Present clear academic records that demonstrate the legitimacy of your training.
