Is there a green card renewal?

Permanent resident status does not need to be renewed: it is lifelong as long as you follow the rules. What expires is the physical green card, which must be renewed periodically.

Not in the sense of renewing your status. Permanent residency is, as a general rule, lifelong, as long as you meet your obligations as a resident. What has an expiration date is the physical green card itself, not your status.

The card expires periodically and must be renewed. This renewal simply updates the document that proves your permanent resident status; it does not renew or recreate the status itself, which continues to exist as long as the requirements are met.

A different situation applies to conditional green cards, such as those based on marriage or investment, which have their own step for removing the conditions. Outside of those cases, it is simply a matter of renewing the card when it approaches its expiration date.

  • Permanent resident status: lifelong, if the rules are followed.
  • The green card itself: expires and requires renewal.
  • Renewing the card updates the document, not the status.

Since deadlines and procedures can change, confirm the current renewal rules on the USCIS website or with a trusted professional.
