Does the USCIS evaluate my ability to financially support myself?

Directly speaking: the EB-2 NIW does not revolve around an analysis of your ability to financially support yourself. The focus of the process is on the merit and national interest of your work, that is, the relevance and potential impact of your contributions to the United States.

Unlike family-based petitions or some employment-based categories, this pathway does not rely on an explicit demonstration of stable income or financial resources upon arrival. What is evaluated is whether your contribution has value for the U.S., based on evidence such as projects, publications, awards, and recognition in your field.

That said, showing that your career generates opportunities and concrete results helps your case: indirectly, it reinforces that your presence is likely to produce economic, technological, or cultural advances. It is not a self-sufficiency test, but rather a relevance test.

Since each case is evaluated individually by the competent authority, it is worth checking the updated requirements at the official source (USCIS) and, if possible, reviewing your profile with a specialist before filing.
