No. Completing a doctorate after your green card has already been approved does not automatically convert your status to EB-1. In the United States, each green card category has its own criteria, and approval in one does not carry over to another on its own.

If your green card was granted through EB-2 NIW, it was based on your qualified profile and the national importance of your work. The EB-1 family, by contrast, requires a different level of evidence:

  • EB-1A: extraordinary ability, demonstrated through a strong body of evidence.
  • EB-1B: outstanding professors and researchers with international recognition.
  • EB-1C: multinational executives and managers.

A doctorate can strengthen your profile and support part of that body of evidence, but it is not enough on its own: EB-1 requires evidence of distinguished recognition in your field. Changing categories means filing a new petition, not an automatic conversion of your current status.

Since each case is evaluated individually, it is worth reviewing the updated requirements from the official source and assessing your profile with a specialist before filing.
