Is a high level of English required?

There is no requirement for a high level of English to apply for the EB-1. This category for individuals with extraordinary ability evaluates outstanding achievements and the candidate’s professional recognition, not language fluency, so there is no need to submit a proficiency test result when filing a petition.

Immigration authorities focus on evidence of distinction in the candidate’s field. English proficiency is not a criterion for visa approval itself, even though the submitted documentation must be understandable to the adjudicators.

That said, having at least a basic command of English makes a practical difference: it eases administrative matters, everyday communication, and the adjustment to the professional and social environment in the United States.
