I was an ‘Oscar’ finalist but did not win. Does that count as a major award?

The EB-1 is designed for individuals who demonstrate extraordinary achievement in their field, and international recognition can go a long way toward establishing that profile. Each case, however, is evaluated individually.

Being an ‘Oscar’ finalist is undoubtedly a significant and prestigious accomplishment in the artistic world. That said, many of the EB-1 criteria place particular weight on actually winning prizes of great renown, as a way to demonstrate excellence and broad impact.

This does not negate the value of the nomination. It can strengthen your track record, but without the win, it will likely need to be supplemented by additional evidence of high-level achievements.

Because the interpretation of these criteria can be complex and is handled on a case-by-case basis, it is worth reviewing the updated guidelines on USCIS and working with a specialist to build a well-rounded petition that brings together multiple strong points.
