I received a government award in my home country. Does it count as national?

It may count, but not automatically. In the EB-1, which is aimed at individuals with extraordinary ability, what matters is not only who grants the award, but how much it represents broad recognition in your field. An award granted by an official government body tends to be viewed as national in scope when it is genuinely prestigious and competitive within the country.

The key point is that being an official award, on its own, does not guarantee it will be treated as nationally significant for immigration purposes. What makes a difference is demonstrating the award’s real weight. It helps to document, for example:

• the selection criteria and how competitive the award is;
• the prestige of the granting body and its importance in the field;
• who else has received the award, showing the level of past recipients.

Gathering coverage, regulations, and evidence of peer recognition helps the officer see the award in its proper context. That way, instead of simply claiming it is national, you demonstrate why it matters.

Since each case is evaluated individually, it is worth confirming updated requirements with USCIS or a specialist before filing.
