For EB-1A, do three regional awards count as one criterion and two mentions in national newspapers count as another?

There is no automatic tally of that kind in EB-1A. The extraordinary ability category does not add items mechanically, and USCIS does not work with formulas like “so many awards equal one criterion.” What matters is the quality and scope of each piece of evidence.

That does not mean your awards and mentions have no value. Several regional awards, taken together, can indeed help demonstrate recognition, as long as you show they carry real prestige in your field. Likewise, press mentions count when they come from recognized outlets and highlight the importance of your work, not merely as a passing reference.

  • Show the prestige and the selection criteria behind each award, not just the count.
  • For press mentions, demonstrate the outlet’s reach and the focus on your work.
  • Think of each criterion as an argument supported by evidence, not a sum.

The evaluation is holistic: the officer looks at the full picture. That is why it is worth organizing your evidence by the strength of each item, with support from a specialist, and checking updated requirements at the official source (USCIS).
