Who Lives in Lower Merion
A township of 64,000 residents with a predominantly white, European-heritage population, a large Jewish community (Modern Orthodox and Conservative), and growing Asian communities (Chinese, Indian, Korean) driven by tech and medicine.
Lower Merion's profile is defined by high income and high educational attainment. The population is predominantly white, with strong Irish, Italian, Anglo-Saxon, and Jewish heritage. The Jewish community is one of the largest and most influential in the greater Philadelphia area, with Conservative, Modern Orthodox, and Reform synagogues throughout. Merion and Bala Cynwyd have a particularly high concentration of Jewish residents.
Recent immigration has brought Asian communities: Chinese residents primarily connected to medicine and tech, Indians, Koreans, and Japanese. Neighborhoods such as Penn Wynne and parts of Wynnewood have a strong South Asian presence. There is also a notable recent European presence (Russian, Ukrainian) and an Iranian community, mainly concentrated in Bryn Mawr.
The African American community is smaller, with a historical presence in certain areas. Residents from other countries are typically doctors, executives, university professors, or students at Bryn Mawr or Villanova. English predominates, and average educational attainment is extremely high: the share of PhD and MBA holders ranks among the highest in the US.
