Who Lives in Bethlehem

A city of 78,000 with strong German heritage (Pennsylvania Dutch and Moravian), a large Hispanic community on the South Side, a Lebanese and Syrian presence, and students from Lehigh University.

Bethlehem is more diverse than it appears at first glance. The North Side maintains a predominantly white profile, with Moravian, German, and Eastern European heritage (Slovak, Ukrainian, Croatian, Polish). The South Side, around the former steel plant and Lehigh University, is home to most of the Hispanic communities and a more cosmopolitan atmosphere.

The Hispanic community is strong, particularly Puerto Rican and Dominican, with a growing Mexican presence. There is a historical Lebanese and Syrian community (with Maronite churches), older Italian enclaves, and recent refugee immigration (Syrians, Afghans). Lehigh University brings global students, with a strong Chinese, Indian, and Middle Eastern presence.

Brazilians are few, generally connected to Lehigh or the hospital. English dominates, Spanish is strong in the South Side, and Arabic, Mandarin, and Hindi are heard around campus. Educational attainment is polarized: many healthcare professionals, professors, and PhD holders alongside manual workers with roots in the industrial legacy.
