Industrial diversity with a strong Latino and Arab presence
The city has a notable proportion of African Americans, a historic Latino community, and one of the oldest Arab communities in the Midwest.
Toledo is a diverse industrial city. White Americans of European descent (German, Polish, Irish, Hungarian) form the historical base. African Americans represent approximately one quarter of the population, concentrated in central and eastern neighborhoods.
The Latino community, primarily Mexican, has roots dating back to agricultural and railroad work in the early twentieth century. Today it is concentrated in neighborhoods such as South Toledo and East Toledo, with markets, bakeries, and taquerías. Salvadorans and Guatemalans represent more recent waves.
The Arab community is one of the oldest in the Midwest, with Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, and Iraqi presence, spread across West Toledo and Sylvania. Mosques, restaurants, and cultural organizations are part of the urban fabric. The Bengali and Indian communities are growing in Perrysburg and Maumee.
