Who Lives in Islip
Suburban mosaic. Brentwood and Central Islip are predominantly Latino and Haitian. Sayville, Bay Shore, and West Islip are more white and middle-class.
The Town of Islip has a diverse demographic profile. Non-Hispanic whites make up roughly 60%, Hispanics 25%, Black residents 9%, and Asians 5%. These averages mask very different realities across hamlets. Brentwood is predominantly Hispanic (over 70%), with a strong Salvadoran presence. Central Islip is mixed, with Latino and African American communities. North Bay Shore has a significant Haitian and Jamaican population.
Sayville, West Islip, East Islip, Islip Village, and Bayport tend to be whiter and more middle-class, with strong Irish and Italian heritage. Ronkonkoma, Holbrook, and Holtsville have a more mixed residential profile. The Salvadoran community in Brentwood is one of the largest outside El Salvador, built over decades of Central American immigration to Long Island.
