Who Lives in Hempstead

A suburban mosaic. Non-Hispanic whites are the majority, with Hispanic, Black, and Asian populations growing significantly. Marked differences exist between villages.

The Town of Hempstead has a mixed demographic profile. Non-Hispanic whites make up approximately 55%, Hispanics 17%, Black residents 14%, and Asians 10%. The aggregate figures, however, mask sharp differences between villages. Hempstead Village is majority Black and Hispanic. Uniondale and Roosevelt have strong African American and Caribbean presences. Elmont is a blend of Haitian, Jamaican, Salvadoran, and South Asian communities.

Villages such as Garden City, Rockville Centre, Manhasset, and Wantagh have traditionally been predominantly non-Hispanic white upper-middle-class communities. Levittown has historically been a working- and middle-class neighborhood. South Asian communities are growing in Elmont, Hicksville (part of the Town of Oyster Bay), and surrounding areas. A Korean presence is concentrated in Manhasset and Great Neck (the latter also within Hempstead).

Languages spoken include English, Spanish (dominant in Salvadoran, Mexican, and Ecuadorian communities), Haitian Creole, French, Mandarin, Korean, Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali. Religions reflect the mosaic: Christianity (Catholic and Protestant), Judaism (strong in the Five Towns area along the southern border), Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Buddhism.

Cost of Living in Hempstead

Rent is lower than in NYC, but property taxes and car ownership add up. Food at ethnic markets is affordable.

Renting in Hempstead Township is generally far more affordable than in central New York City, particularly in villages such as Elmont, Hempstead Village, Uniondale, Roosevelt, and Levittown. Purchasing property is financially feasible for middle-class families, though Nassau County property taxes rank among the highest in the United States, often exceeding $10,000 per year on modest homes.

A car is essential outside village centers. Costs include fuel, maintenance, insurance (expensive in New York), and parking. On the other hand, supermarkets and ethnic grocery stores offer better prices than in New York City. South Asian markets in Elmont, Hispanic markets in Hempstead Village, and Jamaican grocers in Roosevelt carry ingredients at competitive prices.

A monthly LIRR pass to Penn Station ranges from $250 to $350 per month depending on the station. For professionals commuting to Manhattan, the trade-off is a larger home in exchange for a fixed commuting expense. Those who work locally avoid the commute and enjoy a reasonable quality of life at a significantly lower cost than in NYC.

Where to Live in Hempstead

Garden City, Rockville Centre, and Manhasset for upper-middle-class families. Levittown and Wantagh for families. Elmont and Hempstead Village are more affordable.

Garden City is the township's most desirable village, with Victorian and Tudor homes, tree-lined streets, excellent public schools, and convenient LIRR access (28 minutes to Penn Station). Rockville Centre has the feel of a small town with an active Main Street and a central LIRR station. Manhasset and Munsey Park attract families of professionals working in finance and medicine.

Levittown is the historic standardized suburb from 1947, with Cape Cod and ranch-style homes on uniform lots. Wantagh, Bellmore, Merrick, Seaford, and Massapequa, along the south shore, offer homes with access to the Great South Bay. Long Beach is an active seaside city with an ocean beach and a lifestyle distinct from the rest of the township.

For immigrants seeking more affordable options within Nassau, Elmont, Franklin Square, West Hempstead, Uniondale, and parts of Hempstead Village are alternatives. Elmont is particularly diverse, with a strong Afro-Caribbean and South Asian presence. Rents and mortgage payments are more manageable, though public school quality varies.

Work in Hempstead

Healthcare, education, retail, construction, and professional services. Many residents commute to New York City via the LIRR.

The healthcare sector is the largest employer, with Northwell Health (headquartered in New Hyde Park, on the township's edge) leading the market. Northwell operates hospitals including Plainview Hospital, North Shore University Hospital (Manhasset), and Long Island Jewish Medical Center (in Glen Oaks/Queens). Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside is another major regional hospital. Catholic Health Services also operates facilities in the area.

Education is a major employer as well: Hofstra University in Hempstead Village, Adelphi University in Garden City, Molloy College in Rockville Centre, and Nassau Community College in Garden City. Each village's public school system is also a significant employer. Belmont Park in Elmont is the iconic American racetrack, home to the Belmont Stakes (the third leg of the Triple Crown).

Retail and professional services (law, accounting, financial services) are concentrated in Garden City, Rockville Centre, and Mineola (the county seat, outside the township). Roosevelt Field in Garden City is one of the largest shopping malls in the United States. Many residents commute to Manhattan via the LIRR. Newly arrived immigrants find opportunities in construction, landscaping, restaurants, and personal care services.

Each village maintains an independent school district funded through local property taxes. Districts such as Garden City, Rockville Centre, Manhasset, Roslyn (in Hempstead/North Hempstead), and Bellmore-Merrick rank among the best in New York State. Districts such as Hempstead Union Free, Roosevelt, and Uniondale face funding and performance challenges.

For adult immigrants, free ESL courses are available at public libraries (Hempstead Public Library, Garden City Library, and others) and through organizations such as the Hispanic Counseling Center. Nassau Community College offers affordable ESL classes for county residents.

Healthcare

Northwell Health, Mount Sinai South Nassau, and NYU Langone Long Island dominate. Quality care is accessible across nearly the entire township.

Northwell Health is Long Island's largest healthcare system and one of its top employers. It includes hospitals such as North Shore University Hospital (Manhasset, regarded as one of the state's best), Long Island Jewish Medical Center (on the border with Queens), and South Shore University Hospital (Bay Shore, outside the township). Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside (Town of Hempstead) is a major regional referral center.

NYU Langone Long Island (formerly NYU Winthrop) in Mineola is another high-complexity hospital. Catholic Health Services operates Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre. For minor emergencies, dozens of urgent care centers (CityMD, ProHEALTH) serve the area.

Those with employer-sponsored coverage have access to broad networks. Without coverage, the New York State of Health marketplace offers ACA plans. Immigrant communities can access community health centers such as the Hispanic Counseling Center and Long Island FQHCs, with services available in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, and other languages.

Safety in Hempstead

Most of the township is very safe. Hempstead Village, Roosevelt, and Uniondale have above-average crime rates for Nassau County; specific areas warrant attention.

Overall, Nassau County is one of the safest counties in the United States for its population size. Garden City, Rockville Centre, Manhasset, Wantagh, Bellmore, Merrick, and Levittown rank among the safest communities in the country. Violent crime is rare, though residential burglaries and car thefts do occur.

Hempstead Village is the most sensitive area within the township, with crime rates above Nassau County's average. Roosevelt and Uniondale also see more violent incidents in specific zones. Even so, thousands of families live well in these neighborhoods, and most incidents are concentrated on particular streets and during late-night hours.
