The Au Pair program is a cultural exchange experience and, as such, involves participation in childcare activities and family life, but it does not replace the role of an education professional. Generally, the Au Pair takes care of the children with leisure activities and basic support, such as preparing snacks, supervising playtime, and, at times, informally helping with homework – but without assuming the primary responsibility for teaching or academic reinforcement.

It is important to understand that an Au Pair’s duties are defined in a contract agreed upon with the host family and usually include activities related to childcare, while school-related and educational matters are the responsibility of teachers or legal guardians. In some cases, the family may request extra help with homework, but such support must be limited and always aligned with the guidelines of the J program, which aims at cultural exchange and not providing formal education.

Upon entering the program, both the family and the Au Pair must be aware of the stipulated responsibilities and strictly follow the United States immigration laws that regulate this type of visa. It is essential to seek information from reliable sources and, if necessary, consult professionals specialized in immigration to avoid misunderstandings or misleading promises coming from marketing campaigns or companies not aligned with the law.

Thus, help with homework, when it occurs, should be seen as additional support and not as a central part of the Au Pair”s obligations, always respecting the rules and spirit of the program. This approach contributes to a rewarding and safe exchange for both parties.
