What is the difference between visa expiration date and immigration status?

These are two distinct concepts. In the H-1B context, the visa expiration date refers to the period during which the stamp in your passport can be used to request entry into the United States. Your status, on the other hand, is your legal condition while you remain inside the country.

The visa expiration date relates only to travel: it indicates how long that visa can be presented at the port of entry. It does not determine how long you may stay. That is determined by the status granted at admission, recorded on your I-94, the arrival and departure record issued by the border authority (CBP).

This is why the two dates may not align. You may have entered on a visa that was close to expiring yet been granted a status valid for a longer period; in that case, even with an expired visa, your stay remains lawful as long as your status is still in effect. What changes is your ability to travel: if you leave the country with an expired visa, you will need a new visa to re-enter.

Because the practical outcome depends on your specific situation, it is worth checking your I-94 and the official guidance from USCIS and the border authority (CBP), or consulting a specialist before you travel.
