What is STEM OPT?

STEM OPT is an extension of Optional Practical Training (OPT) designed for international students who have graduated in fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It allows these professionals to continue working in the United States for an additional period after completing their degree, in order to gain practical experience related to their field of study.

The purpose is to extend, for an extra period, the work authorization that regular OPT already grants. To access the extension, a few core requirements apply:

• The employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, the official work eligibility verification system.
• A training plan must be submitted showing how the job contributes to professional development in the field of study.
• The degree must be in an eligible STEM field.

Since the exact duration of the extension, deadlines, and the list of eligible programs may change, it is worth confirming the current rules with USCIS or the international student office at your institution before counting on this benefit.
