I have sole-authored academic work. Does that show independence?

Having sole-authored academic work can reinforce the idea that you conduct research independently. In the EB-2 NIW, however, this is one signal among many, not an isolated requirement that decides the case.

The evaluation is holistic. The absence of co-authors helps demonstrate autonomy, but it carries the most weight when accompanied by evidence that your work has real relevance and influence in your field.

• Originality and your own contribution to the research.
• Recognition by peers, citations, and the impact of your work.
• Awards and other indicators of impact in your area of expertise.

In short, publishing alone can be favorable, as long as it is part of a broader body of evidence that demonstrates your excellence and the reach of your work. Since each case is evaluated individually, it is worth consulting the updated guidance at USCIS or speaking with a specialist to position your evidence effectively.
